The meaning of “space” to me….

Space — a continuous area or expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied. Or the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move. OR a position whereas two or more items are at a distance from one another.

Or if you really want to go there, it’s the zone above and around our planet where there is no air to breathe or to scatter light.

Either way, this word “space”…so many meanings/definitions and yet I myself only have one for such a meaningful word.

And that is, the entity that saves me from myself.

You see, I’m a person who happens to live in a city whereas “space” is NOT in abundance nor is it a luxury. Also, I work in a field whereas this idea of “space” is such a Cro-Magnon idea. So this whole thing of “space” is such a weird/awkward idea for most of the people (specifically my friends/colleagues) that I deal with, that sometimes I question myself on why does it mean so much to me.

But then I remember why the word means so much.

Because it means that I can breathe and relax. You see, “space” to me is “essential” because to be able to find that place whether physically (like a coffee shop with good acoustic tunes) or mentally and stop/slow down and get away from the things that stress me out about life is what keeps me sane and at peace. Whether it be living as a black man in this country who just so happens to be “disabled”, or living in a city whereas referring to it alone scares the holy hell out of you or working a job that’ll quite literally kill you both physically/emotionally and mentally all at the same time! “Space” is such an essential for me because it gives me the one tool I need to whereas I can relax, recover and recoup from all of these trials and tribulations of life AND just in a ways….STOP.

Just….the ability to be able to feel like your slowing/stopping the world from beating you up piece by piece and to find your little piece of happiness to continue on with taking on the world? Priceless.

Thus….the meaning of the word “space” to me? A tool of life whereas it saves me from life.
